Reconstruction era after the civil war
What is reconstruction?
A program put in place by the federal government to repair damage to the South and restore the southern states to the Union.
Main focuses in reconstruction:
- How will the Southern states rejoin?
- How will the Southern economy be rebuilt?
- What rights will Africans Americans have?
June 19th, 1865
-Juneteenth
-General Gordon Granger arrives in Texas and takes control
-He announces that all slaves are emancipated
Purpose of the Freedmen’s Bureau:
Help freedmen
How did the Freedmen’s Bureau help freedmen?
- Gave them jobs
- Built schools
- Provided food
Who killed Abraham Lincoln?
John Wilkes Booth
What was Linoln’s murderer’s goal?
To restore the Confederacy and reignite the Civil War
Describe Johnson’s reconstruction plan.
- Each state had to nullify its act of secession
- Each state had to abolish slavery and ratify the 13th amendment

What was the goal of ex-confederates in power?
Restrict the rights of African Americans as much as possible
Why is this a problem?
Texas was refusing to pass laws that increased or protected African American rights
What are black codes?
Laws passed to restrict the freedoms of African Americans
Examples of black codes:
- Law passed which states that African Americans could not vote, participate in juries, or testify in court.
- African Americans can only work certain jobs in agriculture.
- If African Americans are unemployed, they will be fined a hefty sum and forced to pay it off by working on a plantation.
Goal of the Ku Klux Klan:
Prevent African Americans from exercising their rights using violence.
Who did the Ku Klux Klan target?
- Scalawags (Southerners who supported reconstruction
- Carpetbaggers (Northerners who came to the South to take advantage of Southerners)
- African Americans
- Freedmen’s Bureau workers
What were the two goals of radical reconstruction?
- Have tougher requirements for states to rejoin
- Protect the rights of African Americans
Why did Radical Republicans take over reconstruction?
Johnson’s plan was too lenient and they wanted to punish the South
What are military districts?
Areas governed by the military (Martial Law)
Why was martial law thrust upon southern states?
Radical Republicans wanted to make sure that the Southern States were cooperating with their plans for reconstruction

Abolished Slavery
14th Amendment
Allowed African Americans to gain citizenship and protected them
15th amendment
Gave voting rights to African Americans

What happened in the 1872 election?
-It was rigged
-Democrats used threats and violence to scare African Americans from voting
-Democrats won the election
