freedmen’s Bureau
The Freedmen’s Bureau was established in 1865 to assist freed slaves and poor whites in the South by providing food, housing, medical aid, and education. It played a crucial role in helping African Americans transition from slavery to freedom.
The Bureau was eventually dissolved in 1872
reconstruction amendments 13-15 and Juneteenth
13th Amendment (1865): Abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime.
14th Amendment (1868): Granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States and guaranteed equal protection under the laws.
15th Amendment (1870): Prohibited the denial of the right to vote based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude
Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and ensure that all enslaved people were freed
Booker T. Washington vs. W.E.B. Du Bois
Booker T. Washington: Advocated for vocational education and economic self-reliance for African Americans. He believed that economic progress would lead to social and political equality.
W.E.B. Du Bois: Focused on civil rights and higher education. He argued for immediate political and social equality and was a founding member of the NAACP.
