47
Q

Why was the outcome of the presidential election of 1876 in dispute? How was the dispute resolved, and what was its result as it related to Reconstruction?

A

The outcome of the presidential election of 1876 was in dispute because the results of the election in three states were disputed. If either candidate won those electoral votes, he would win the election. To resolve the dispute, Congress appointed a commission that included eight Republicans and seven Democrats. The commission voted along party lines (8-7) to award all the electoral votes from the disputed states to Hayes. The Democrats agreed to accept Hayes as president and accept Reconstruction Amendments (the 13th, 14th, and 15th) if the Republicans agreed to remove the last federal troops from the South, thus ending Reconstruction.
