Why did African Americans stay in the South?
Because they worked hard for in their families, communities, they started their own businesses, they didn’t think life would be better anywhere else.
Why did some African Americans move?
They wanted equality, better treatment, and a better life
What were new requirements to vote?
Poll tax and a literacy test- anyone who wanted to vote had to pass a reading test and pay a fee, because of this many AA didn’t vote

Grandfather clause
stated that taxes and tests did not apply to any man whose father or grandfather could vote on 1867. Since no blacks could vote on that date, this only applied to whites.
