Lincoln’s 10% plan
Called for only small percentages of a states population to swear loyalty to be readmitted. Amnesty to confederate officials and officers were granted.
Johnson’s plan
The majority of the southerners to swear loyalty to be readmitted as a state. Also, it called for the ratification of the 13 amendment and not the 14 and 15 amendments.
Southern democrat plan
Called for a return to the old ways ( slavery and etc ). Also the 14 and the 15 amendment should not be ratified ( made into law)
Radical Republican plan
Wanted to punish the south. Banned all confederate generals and officials from political office and required ratifying ( making into a law) the 14 and 15 amendments
Amnesty
When a president grants pardons to a large group of people

When a judge or president allows a person to not be punished
Freedmans bureau
An organization designs by congress to help newly freed slaves become normal citizens. They were given food money and schools for education
Carpetbagger
A northerner who moved south to make money off of the southern people. Called a carpetbagger because the suitcase that they carried their possessions in were many times made out of plaid or carpet material.
Scalawag
A southerner who supported northern ideas and wanted reconstruction occur. Were treated just like as bad as African Americans
Poll tax
Required to vote, must be paid every year to vote, and hurts poor African Americans who cannot afford to pay the tax. Keeps them from voting so only white people will stay in office.
Lynch
Tho hang a person without a trial. Was used on mainly African Americans by southerners ( particularly the Ku Klux Klan) for the purpose of fear.
Jim Crow - insult to blacks
Jim Crow laws
Discrimination laws against African Americans. The name was meant to be insulting blacks
Black codes
Local, unwritten discriminatory laws against blacks. Not allowed to carry guns, gather ip in groups, and etc.
Civil rights act of 1875
Made it a crime for any individual to deny someone person equal use of public places. Prohibited discrimination in jury section
Grandfather clause
If a member of a family was able to vote before 1867, these people do not have to take the literacy test created in order to vote. Since no African American was allowed to vote before this date, all African Americans were required to take this test. This allowed poor, uneducated whites to vote.
Literacy test
Test given to African Americans in the south to see whether they can vote. Testa made impossible so African Americans could not vote.
13 amendment
Slavery is abolished in the United States
14 amendment
All men are created equal under the law. All men have equal rights regardless of race or ethnicity.
15 amendment
All men are allowed to vote, regardless of race or ethnicity.
President Andrew Johnson
17 president
Hated aristocrats but did not want equality between blacks and whites.
He believed that the power is for reconstruction should be in control by the president.
His firsts as president are to have a veto to be overridden and to be impeached by congress ( found not guilty by the senate by one vote).
Ku klux klan
Founded by Nathaniel Bedford forest
Created to stop radical reconstruction, return the south to the old ways, and precedent freed blacks from voting or holding political office.
Ulysses s grant
18 president of the United States
Created the completed transcontinental railroad, secret service, and stopped the early parts of the Ku klux klan.
Appointed many friends to cabinet positions who ended up getting caught for money scandals, making grant look bad
Us vs Reese
It said that literacy tests and poll tax in the case of voting does not violate civil rights.

It said that the states must punish those people who violate the 14 amendment
Bradwell vs Illinois
Myra bradwell prohibited in Illinois from being a lawyer because she was a woman

Secretary Babcock was found among Chicago politicians receiving kickbacks on whiskey taxes

Increase creation of greenbacks decreases the worth of the dollar cost loss in faith in the economy. Create a six-year depression in the United States
