Recognizing the Earth's Subsystem Flashcards
What are the four subsystems?
Biosphere, Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, and Lithosphere
This is the portion of the Earth system that includes the Earth’s interior, rocks and minerals, landforms and the processes that shape the Earth’s surface.
Lithosphere
What is the lithosphere also referred to as?
Geosphere
This subsystem is where we exactly live in.
Lithosphere
This is the liquid water component of the Earth.
Hydrosphere
What are examples of Lithosphere?
Distribution of mountains, position of continents, shape of the sea floor, location of major rives and flood plains
How many percent does water cover the surface of the Earth?
70%
This subsystem is important because it contains water.
Hydrosphere
What is Hydrosphere’s role?
Sustains a variety of life forms and regulates the atmosphere and its surrounding ecosystems.
This is a layer of gases surrounding a planet of sufficient mass that is held in place by the gravity of the Earth.
Atmosphere
What is the Atmosphere’s role?
- It blocks some of the Sun’s dangerous rays from reaching Earth.
- Traps heat, making Earth a comfortable temperature.
- Provides oxygen
This is the biological component of Earth systems.
Biosphere
This subsystem includes all living organisms on earth, together with the dead organic matter produced by them.
Biosphere
What are examples of Hydrosphere?
Oceans, lakes, seas, ponds, rivers, streams
What are examples of Biosphere?
Mushroom, bacteria
This is the solid part of the planet’s continental crust, the portion of the earth on which human being live.
Lithosphere
This is the largest and oldest of the spheres.
Lithosphere
This sphere consisted largely of carbon dioxide from Earth’s interior as well as gases brought to Earth by comets.
Atmosphere
Elemental hydrogen and helium escaped the planet, and much of the carbon was deposited in what we became known as..?
Carbonate rocks
The largest but far from the only component of Earth
Oceans
Consists of all the planet’s water except for water vapor in the atmosphere.
Hydrosphere
This is necessary to life.
Water
This consists of all living organisms as well as any formerly living material that has not yet decomposed.
