What are Liqueurs?
An alcoholic drink that uses a distilled spirit as a base before having other flavourings added to it as well as a sweetener.

What are the three main ingredients in whisky?
Water,barley and yeast
What are the five steps to make whisky?
- Malting: Soaked then dried, is now malt, then milled into grist
- Mashing: Mix grist and water, this is the mash, stir mash, becomes wort
- Fermentation: Add yeast to the wort and ferment, becomes the wash
- Distillation: Distilling the wash two or three times, only the heart can be processed
- Maturation: Oak casks, at least three years
What is defined as a bourbon?
Bourbon is made in the US from a grain mix that is >51% corn, distilled to a maxmimum strength of 80%. Does not need to be aged for a minimum time.
Examples: Jack Daniels, Jim Bean, Wild Turkey
Canadian mist, Crown royal, Pendleton are all examples of which type of drink?
Rye whisky
Describe Irish whisky
Maximum distillation strength of 94.8% and must be aged no less than three years in Ireland.
Examples: Bushmills, Jameson, Tullamore Dew
What is a Scotch?
Scotch whisky must be 100% made in Scotland, aged for minimum 3 years, no stronger than 94.8% and must us malted barley. The inclusion of fermentation additives is forbidden.
Examples: Glenmorangie, Laphroaig, Glenfiddich, Johnnie Walker, The Famous Grouse
What is brandy?
Brandy is distilled wine made from grapes or other fruits like pears,apples or damsons.
What is Cognac?
Cognac is a wine brandy from a specific region in France. It must use one of the authorised grape varieties, most commonly Ugni blanc. It also need to be distilled twice and then aged for a minimum of two years in French oak barrels.
Examples: Courvoisier, Hennessy, Martell, Rémy Martin
What are the grades of Cognac?
V.S = Very Special = young brandy stored for at least 2 years
V.S.O.P = Very Special Old Pale = young brandy stored for at least 4 but no more than 6 years
XO = Extra Old = Aged minimum 6 years or up to 20 years
Napoleon = between XO and V.S.O.P
Extra = older than Napoleon or XO
Viexu = same as Napoleon
Vieille Réserve = a grade higher than XO
Hors d’âge = beyond age, outlier of superior quality
