Receptors Agonists And Antagonists Flashcards
Antagonist
Is a substance that binds to and blocks a receptor thereby preventing a natural neurotransmitter or hormone from exerting is effect.
Agonist
Is a substance that binds to and activates a neurotransmitter receptor in the process mimicking the effect of a natural hormone.
What happens when an antagonist binds to a neurotransmitter receptor
The normal action of the neurotransmitter will be blocked
What happens when the agonistic adrenergic effects ephedra
It mimicked the effects of norepinephrine.
Sympathetic division does
Fight or flight responses, slows down urine formation and digestive activities, increase the rate and force of heart contraction and dilates the pupils
Parasympathetic division does
Rest and digest responses, stimulates urination and defecation and stimulates salivation and lacrimation(tears, weeping)
