Receptors Flashcards
Why is the Pacinian corpuscle described as a mechanoreceptor?
Detects firm pressure
How does permeability of stretch mediated sodium ion channels change with pressure?
When pressure is applied, they deform, and they become more permeable to sodium ions
What part of the eye contains receptors?
Retina
Of rod cells and cone cells, which are there more in the eye?
Rod cells
Where are rod cells found?
Periphery of the retina
Where are the cone cells found?
Fovea
Why do rod cells respond to low intensity light?
Low intensity light has enough energy to break down down rhodopsin and produce a generator potential
What is retinal convergence?
Many rod cells synapse to the same bipolar neuron. This is an example of spatial summation
What are the effects of retinal convergence ?
High sensitivity of rods, and lead to low visual acuity
Why do cone cells provide a high visual acuity?
Each cone forms a synapse with a separate bipolar neuron
