Knows own name.
Begins to understand names of toys, family members, and clothing.
Responds to simple noun words cued by gesture and or the environment.
13-14 months
Discriminates among familiar noises (i.e., telephone, doorbell, vacuum).
Finds baby in a picture when asked.
Recognizes hair, mouth, nose, hands when they are named.
Begins to identify objects when they are named.
15-16 months
Responds to simple commands without gestures (i.e., put the ball on the chair, get your shoes).
Two objects identified in a box.
Enjoys picture books.
Listens to rhymes or songs for several minutes.
17-18 months
Begins to discriminate between words which sound alike.
Can identify 4 objects in a box.
Identifies 4 or 5 parts of a doll.
Begins to understand names of friends.
Begins to understand action words (i.e., run, walk, sleep, eat, etc.)
Understands simple questions (i.e., do you want to eat lunch?)
19-20 months
Identifies 8-10 body parts on self and doll.
Will follow a short series of related commands.
Consistently discriminates between words which sound alike.
21-22 months
Follows simple verb words or commands not physically cued.
Responds to “bye-bye” with gesture.
Understands the preposition “in”
23-24 months
