Why do coastal areas need to rebrand?
- tatty and outdated
- high unemployment
- lack of services
Why have coastal areas declined?
- foreign holidays/ ‘package holidays’
- transport improvements, e.g. air travel
- changing expectations
- increase in car ownership (people go to seaside for a day)
Why do urban areas rebrand?
- high crime
- abandoned estates
- poor education
Define rebranding.
Developing a place to reposition its image and change people’s idea of it, helping to ‘sell’ the place to a target audience.
Define regenerating.
Positively transforming the economy of a place that has displayed symptoms of decline.
Define reimaging, providing one example.
Positively changing the standing and reputation of a place through specific improvements e.g. increasing cultural identity
Explain the difference between space and place.
Space refers to the physical location and the distribution of geographical features, whereas place is a ‘space’ that has been given meaning by people.
How can you show an image?
Why is image important?
Through a variety of media: websites, pictures, poetry, paintings and cartoons. What image says about a place may determine its successfulness.
