Reasons Why The Final Scene Is Effective Flashcards
Relates to themes of love, madness, identity
ORSINO
“Go after him and try to calm him down a little.
He hath not told us of the captain yet.
When that is known and golden time convents,
A solemn combination shall be made
Of our dear souls.”
Not only has Malvolio left unhappy he has also placed uncertainty on the marriage of Viola and Orsino
- Orsino is saying that until Malvolio can provide some contact with the sea captain in order to get Violas clothing back they will all have to stay put - and so the celebrations have been halted. We see that there isn’t the perfect conclusion with issues still to be solved.
Relates to themes of love, madness and excess because Orsino has two different ways of seeing one person
Orsino
“For so you shall be while you are a man;
But when in other habits you are seen,
Orsino’s mistress, and his fancy’s queen. “
We get to see that there is a number of problems with Orsinos marriage
For so you shall be while you are a man;
But when in other habits you are seen,
Orsino’s mistress, and his fancy’s queen.
- We see that Orsino is mad and does not know whether he loves Viola or Cesario
Twelfth night is festive and joyful but it must reach an end - Themes of love, excess, identity
“A great while ago the world begun,
With hey, ho, the wind and the rain,
But that’s all one, our play is done,
And we’ll strive to please you every day.”
Feste conveys this in the last song of the play - about growing up to discover the harsh reality of life
The Twelfth night feast must end. Conveyed in the last line of Festes song and give way to the ‘wind and the rain’ of life. We continue to see that Shakespeare has gone for an ending which reminds us that not all is joyous.
We get to see that not all is joyous
“I’ll be revenged on the whole pack of you”
Relates to madness and perhaps love because he feels unloved and there is a sense that Malvolios character will not do such a thing
Malvolio’s last words add realism to an idyllic ending - there is someone parted from the others happiness. Less apparent would be Antonio’s unfulfilled love with heterosexual marriage. We get to see that this play has a realistic ending by giving a logical ending point.
