Reasons to Render Patient Edentulous Flashcards
6 reasons FOR rendering a patient edentulous.
- Caries.
- Periodontal Disease
- Appearance
- Malocclusion
- Overload of opposing jaw, especially edentulous lower.
- Patient’s request.
4 reasons AGAINST rendering a patient edentulous.
- Masticatory efficiency reduced.
- Alveolar resorption.
- Muscular skills required to manage F/F (special difficulty in the elderly).
- Medical conditions.
What is an alternative to edentulousness?
Overdentures.
What are the requirements for overdentures (5)?
Roots must be :
- caries free.
- Have good periodontal support.
- usually require endo treatment.
- restorable.
- should allow patient to maintain good OH level.
2 advantages of overdentures.
Preserve alveolar bone + retain proprioception.
2 things that make older people more prone to caries.
- Older people experience gingival recession and thus increased prevalence of root caries.
- Older people take medication that reduces salivary flow, thus increases caries prevalence.
3 tooth movements that can lead to severe malocclusion
Drifting, tilting, overeruption.
What is meant by overloading the opposing jaw as an indication for rendering a patient edentulous? (what does it cause).
Especially in LOWER EDENTULOUS.
Overloading of lower denture leads to INSTABILITY and issues with PAIN/ DISCOMFORT with the lower denture.
Who makes the crown?
Lab technicians.
- prepare the tooth.
- take impressions
- cast in stone and ARTICULATE.
3 benefits of making a crown extra-orally in the lab?
- Occlusal pattern on the crown can be made to conform to the existing occlusion or to a reorganised occlusion.
- Can take into account guidance in excursive movements.
- Can be made with idea contact points and appropriate contour.
