  • Reluctance of US to escalate beyond NK into China
  • Terrain of Korea too harsh for UN troops, China used to it
  • SK government under Rhee too corrupt
  • NK getting lots of support from USSR and China

Four reasons for why stalemate took too long?

A
  • Arguments over prisoners of wars- captured NK and C troops didn’t want to return and US didn’t want them to
  • US/UN kept on heavily bombing NK through peace talks. Pyongyang reduced to rubble
  • Rhee refused to compromise and ordered further attacks
  • China worried US might consider expanding war

  • Eisenhower president 1953 and promised to end war

- Stalin died March 1953, NK and C not sure that new leader would support them in war with US

- US/UN killed 500,000 Chinese communists
