Four reasons for stalemate?
A
- Reluctance of US to escalate beyond NK into China
- Terrain of Korea too harsh for UN troops, China used to it
- SK government under Rhee too corrupt
- NK getting lots of support from USSR and China

Four reasons for why stalemate took too long?
A
- Arguments over prisoners of wars- captured NK and C troops didn’t want to return and US didn’t want them to
- US/UN kept on heavily bombing NK through peace talks. Pyongyang reduced to rubble
- Rhee refused to compromise and ordered further attacks
- China worried US might consider expanding war

- Eisenhower president 1953 and promised to end war
- Stalin died March 1953, NK and C not sure that new leader would support them in war with US

- Communism contained at 38th parallel, SK capitalist
- US/UN killed 500,000 Chinese communists

A
- 30,000 US causalities and 1/10 Korean civilians dead
- NK lost to communism and formed tight relationship with C and USSR
- Cost - defence spending rose from $12b-$60b
