all reasons for innacuracy (9)
- terrain
- climate
- lack of trust
- size of the country
- literacy rate
- nomadic population
- communication
- conflict
- illegal immigration
terrain
mountainous countries make it hard to reach populations in remote areas
- eg. Himalayas
climate
some roads become impassable due to flooding in countries which experience rainy seasons
- eg. Haiti
lack of trust
countries which have suffered civil unrest may mean people are less likely to trust the government and answer questions honestly
- eg. Cameroon
size of the country
some country’s territory is vast and spread over many islands, so it is difficult to reach each one
- eg. Indonesia
literacy rate
low literacy rates means that the government will have to spend money on hiring enumerators to carry out the survey verbally
- eg. Afghanistan
nomadic population
populations which move around may be easy to miss when carrying out surveys, as they have no permanent address
- eg. Masai people of Tanzania
communication
in some countries, many languages are spoken, so surveys will have to be translated, where errors may be made in translation
- eg. Indonesia
conflict
war zones mean it it is difficult and dangerous for enumerators to enter certain areas, meaning some populations may be missed out
- eg. Syria
illegal immigration
illegal immigrants and those whose immigration status remains unresolved may want to avoid detection, resulting in them being missed out
- eg. Burmese migrants in Thailand
