Smoking point
Cigarettes contain many harmful substances like lead which can impact your body negatively, causing effects such as lung cancer.
Smoking example
72% of lung cancer cases in the UK are caused by smoking.
Smoking analysis
This suggests that smoking can kill people or make them ill which can in turn cause the NHS to expend more and use more manpower to help people with conditions that can be avoided.
Smoking evaluation
As a result of smoking, people become more ill and can even die because of it. Overall, smoking is very bad for your health and those that do it can experience dangerous repercussions. It can be a main cause in making people unhealthy as they can get damaging illnesses such as cancer.
Poverty point
As a result of living in a deprived area, habitants can experience poorer services in things such as GPs and doctors.
Poverty example
In Glasgow, Possilpark (a deprived area) received £10 less per patient compared to Bears Den (a wealthy area).
Poverty analysis
When GP services receive less funding, they cannot get as much access to effective resources to help habitants with their health. The lack of funding could lead to less nurses and doctors working there, reducing the volume of appointments able to be made.
Poverty evaluation
This could lead to people having to wait to be seen and therefore their conditions worsening, disrupting their health. Overall, living in a poverty stricken area can be damaging to someone’s health as the healthcare provided is not as effective as GPs in a wealthier area due to lack of funding.
Housing point 1
Poorer housing estates tend to have a lack of facilities and badly made homes. This can cause mould and damp which can lead to residents getting breathing issues such as asthma.
Housing example 1
Research found that people with asthma are 2 times as likely to live in a home with dampness.
Housing analysis 1
This suggests that poorer areas of housing means that residents are more likely to be ill and have poor health.
Housing evaluation 1
This means that they get less opportunities in things such as sport and exercise, further damaging their health.
Housing point 2
In deprived areas with poorer housing, they may only have communal outdoor spaces which are typically unsafe for people to go to.
Housing analysis 2
This means they are typically stuck in their house for long periods of time and do not get fresh air or exercise.
