Reasoning Flashcards
Three types of reasoning
Deductive
Inductive
Abductive
What is deductive reasoning
two or more premises that lead to a conclusion
What is inductive reasoning
a premise that leads to conclusion
What is abductive reasoning
a narrative hypothesis that is tested against emerging evidence to create a refined conclusion
Issue with deductive
Its scientific structure means conclusions seem immutably true, but rely on the truth of the premises
Issues with inductive
Features a misleading unspoken premise
Unspoken premise is a generalisation, meaning the conclusions are not absolutely true
diluted by schemata and heuristics
Issues with abductive
completely dependant on evidence given and order of
What is narrative
feature of abductive reasoning whereby persons tells story
Two types of narrative story
operative and background
What is the operative story
what actually happened
What is the background story
schema, generalisations, myths (how the world works)
How do practitioners use narrative
Try and get operative story as close to the background story as possible. They heavily edit their evidence and call it in a certain order to produce a certain storyline in the minds of the ToF
What happens if no coherent narrative
Jury makes their decisions based on irrelevant considerations
