How did an increase in students create opposition?
Young people rejected attitudes of previous generations and wanted social change and many were opposed to the draft
How was the media coverage of the Vietnam War different to previous wars?
Reports were able to travel with the troops into the war zone and report back on what they saw- the Vietnam war was described as a ‘media war’
What impact did media coverage have on the publics opinion of the war?
Americans began to believe that TV reporters were being more honest than politicians about what was really going on. The reports inspired the public to get involved in understanding and debating the issue and people started to believe the government was misleading and couldn’t be trusted
What was the draft?
It forced men ages 18-25 to serve in the military forces
I’m 1966, how were the first men chosen for draft?
The US authorities chose those they viewed as ‘delinquent’
What was the lottery system?
A draft system that involved men born between 1944 and 1950 being issue a number and called up at random
Out of the 2.6 million soldiers who served, how many were drafteees?
650 000
How did some men react to being drafted?
Some would burn their draft card, or refuse to join up
What happened if your tried to avoid the draft?
You were known as a ‘draft dodger’ which was a criminal offense
How did men avoid getting arrested from avoiding the draft?
Some would flee to Canada, and wealthier people would postpone being called up by going to college or studying abroad
