Research methods
The strategies processes or techniques used in the collection of data or evidence for analysis or to uncover new information
Aim
•statement of what researchers intend to find out
Experiment
Involves the manipulation of an independent variable to measure the effect

Anything that can change

Null hypothesis
•Every study has one
•this predicts that a statistically significant effect or relationship WILL NOT BE FOUND
Null hypothesis- experiments
There will not be a difference between two conditions
Null hypothesis- correlation
Is not stating that there will be a relationship between two things
Non directional hypothesis
•two tailed research hypothesis does not predict a direction of results
•no previous research
•predict a significant difference between things

•states the difference between two conditions
•does not predict direction of results
Non directional relationship hypothesis-correlation
•correlation study “there will be a relationship between …”
•stating the relationship between two things
•non directional it does not predict direction of results
Hypothesis
Predicts a statistically significant effect of an IV on a DV or relationship between variables
Directional difference hypothesis- experiments
•this states a difference between two conditions
•directional (one-tailed) as it predicts direction of results
Directional relationship hypothesis- correlation
•correlation as it states a relationship between two things
• directional (two-tailed) as it is predicting direction of results
Strength
Order effects
are avoided – participants only take part in one
condition so they cannot get better/worse between conditions, they cannot get tired and bored
