A
Picking and choosing what we will and will not include.
Purpose, Scale (next topic), Drawing ability, Visual acuity of map readers

What is classification?
A
The grouping together of features deemed similar and separation of those deemed different. Often hierarchical in nature.

What is symbolization?
A
The assignment of a visual code (icon/picture) for each category on the map that is to be shown as different. Done to databases for display to humans later on.
