Q

Explain intergroup competition:

A
  • Prejudice arises from competition, which can come in many forms
  • When 2 groups striving for same goal, prejudice intensifies

Q

Explain negative interdependence:

A
  • 2 groups of ppl both seeking same goal but only 1 group can achieve it, can sabotage another’s efforts
  • Interactions with members of opposing group = Hostile
  • Interactions with members of in group = cooperative
  • Being perceived as collaborator or competitor determines whether treated favourably or with hostility
  • Zero sums fate = Can only be 1 group who win, in group always win at cost of out group

Q

Explain limited resources:

A

Competition between groups may be for:
- Scarse material, highly desirable, not a lot of
- Physical resources
- Symbolic resources

  • Highest levels if discrimination occurs when competition is for physical + scarce resources
  • More discrimination = Less resources
  • Competition for these resources can be real or perceived

Q

Explain positive interdependence + superordinate goals:

A
  • Prejudice arising through intergroup conflict can be reduced through groups working cooperatively to accomplish common goal
  • Positive interdependence occurs when neither group can reach its goal unless the other group reaches theirs
  • Superordinate goals can only be reached through intergroup cooperation, each group has to facilitate other group’s achievements
