International Relations is a constant struggle for power among states

Anarchy
There is no higher power than the state, have to look after themselves, change is slow
The State
- All are equal
- Selfish
- Survival at the expense of morality
Human Nature
inherently selfish, egotistical, power-seeking, rational

Individual level: state of nature is a struggle for self-preservation
State level: constant power struggles, balancing power and preserving the national interest
System level: anarchic system means there is no higher power to end competition

4 critiques of Realism
- Fails tot account for change: post-WW2- liberalist
- Too much focus on the state/what about IGOs
- Conflict may not be inevitable
- Immoral- denies internationals laws like human rights
