Realism Flashcards
Left Realism
Inequality in a capitalist society as the cause of crime.
Lee and Young (Left) Causes of crime
Relative deprivation, (how well off you are from others). Jealousy of what others have that you don’t, technology, money or bigger house
Subcultures, a groups way of achieving society material goals, by resorting to crime when legitimist means are blocked
Marginalisation, groups with out organisations to represent their interest and goals (unemployed)
Right Realism
The best way to resolve the problems of criminality is to get tough on crime. Crime is committed because:
Biological Differences, inherited personality traits
Inadequate Socialisation, effective socialisation reduces the risk of a person becoming a criminal by teaching them self-control and correct values
Offending is a rational choice, we all have free will to commit the crimes (rational choice)
