morpheme
the smallest meaningful unit of language. The word “cat” is a morpheme
grapheme
a written letter or a group of letters that represents one speech sound. A grapheme may just be one letter, or a group of letters that make one sound
alphabetic knowledge
knowledge of the shapes and names of letters of the alphabet
alphabetic principal
understanding that there is a systematic relationship between the sounds of spoken English words
diphthong
a vowel produced by the tongue shifting position during articulation; a vowel that feels as if it has two parts (ow, oy, ou)
fluency
the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with proper expression and comprehension
homograph
words that are spelled the same but has a different sound and meaning (i.e. lead, follow; lead, a metal)
homophone
words that sound the same, but are not spelled the same and have different meanings (two/to/too, prey/pray)
metacognition
aware of one’s own thinking
morphology
the unit of meaning within words
orthographic mapping
the ability to identify words by sight
orthography
the conventional spelling system of a language
syntax
the arrangement of words and phrases to create well formed sentences in a language
schwa
an unaccented vowel which makes a very similar sound to short u
derivative
a word formed by adding suffixes and prefixes to a root or by combining two base words to form a compound word
