What does SPIES stand for?
Types of experiences:
Social
Physical
Intellectual
Emotional
Spiritual
What is visual salience?
The distinct perceptual quality that makes an object in the image stand out and grab our attention
What is proxemics?
The use of distances - between people or between people and objects - which communicate the nature of their relationship
What does colour do?
Have different connotations and symbolic meaning. They create mood and influence the emotional response of the viewer.
What is demand gaze?
When the character stares directly at the viewer. This confronts the viewer and demands communication. Imagery saying “I demand you to…”
What is offer gaze?
When the character is looking away from the viewer. This invites the viewer into the world of the character. Imagery saying “I am inviting you to understand…”
What are visible vectors in images?
Actual lines connecting characters or objects in the image
What are invisible vectors in images?
Line created through gaze or sight
What does a frontal angle suggest?
Communicates involvement
What does a side-on angle suggest?
Communicates detachment
What does looking up angle suggest?
Communicates power and dominance
What does a looking down angle suggest?
Communicates weakness and submission
What are the six questions you should consider for an unseen text?
What is the experience?
Who is experiencing it?
What has caused or led to it?
Effects of consequences within the text?
Are there any complexities to the experience?
Effect on the responder?
What are the five types of sensory imagery?
Auditory, tactile, gustatory, olfactory and visual
What is personification?
The attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something non-human
