What is the purpose of reading?
Language acquisition, Communication, For sharing information and ideas.
What should you do before reading?
Build background information, connect prior knowledge, connect to personal lives.
What should you do during reading?
Return to purpose, Main idea, Identify details, Sequence, Cause/effect, Compare & contrast, Draw conclusions.
What should after reading?
Summarize, Retell, Story structure, Connect to personal lives.
What is skimming?
Skimming also known as gist reading, helps the reader understand the text at its most basic level.
What is scanning?
Scanning involves getting your eyes to quickly scuttle across sentence and is used to get a simple information.
What is a scientific text?
A scientific text explains a scientific topic, such as the life cycle of a frog or the rings of Saturn. Can be found in science magazines, textbooks and experiments.
What is a technical text?
A technical text provides detailed information about a specific topic or how to perform a specific task. Can be found in user manuals, instructions, brochures and recipes.
What is a mechanism description?
It explains the arrangement and shape of an object in space as well as its movement.
What is classification?
It involves grouping things on the basis of similarities and dividing according to differences.
What is partition?
It is the act of dividing things into their component parts.
What is definition?
It uses words to fix the meaning of a thing to make it definite.
What is compare and contrast?
It analyzes two or more things, based on established criteria. For C/C to work they must be comparable and have valid criteria for both.
What is process description?
Explains the arrangement of a sequence in chronological order.
What is SPSE?
Situation: Background and context for the problem.
Problem: What is the and its effects?
Solution: Two or more potential solutions
Evaluation: How effective are the solutions? Which is more effective?
