When examining any type of map, what does the ratio 1:50 mean, for example?
A
Any one measurement taken on the map, should be multiplied by 50 to get the real-time, actual measurement of the distance.

On a map, what does topography show?
A
The height of the land surface, and the shape of the land surface.

What are Eastings and Northings?
A
Eastings and Northings are in reference to the National Grid. I.e, to find position on a map (co-ordinates) eastings and northings is required.
On the bottom side of the grid, from 0 - 600km is Eastings
On the left side of the grid, from 0 - 1200km is Northings
