Express an emotion or pause. (Uh, ah, er, um)
Syntax
The study of of how sentences are constructed.
Declarative sentence
Makes a statement of fact or opinion
Exclamatory sentence
Expresses an emotion or states a fact or opinion strongly
Interrogative sentence
Asks a question
Imperative sentence
Gives an order to someone
Clause
A group of words containing a subject and verb
Independent clause
Can stand alone and make sense as a sentence
Dependent clause
Can support an independent clause but cannot stand alone
Phrase
A group of words that work together in a sentence but cannot stand alone
Subject
A single word in a subject that is doing or being something
Predicate
the part of a sentence or clause containing a verb and stating something about the subject

Etymology
The study of the origin of words and the way in which their meanings have changed throughout history.
Denotation
Literal or dictionary meaning of a word
Connotation
an idea or feeling that a word invokes in addition to its literal or primary meaning.
Context
Refers to information outside of the text, available to a reader through understanding of genre, situation, and world knowledge.
Pragmatics
Studies how context helps us decipher the meaning of words and govern meaning.
Phonology
The study of a languages sound system and how sounds convey meaning.
Phonological awareness
Refers to the understanding that words are built upon sounds and that sounds can be combined to form words. Begins with the easiest skills identifying the first sound in a word.
