Inference
a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning.
Figurative Language
refers to the use of words in a way that is different of meaning in order to convey a complicated meaning, colorful writing, clarity.
Metaphor
a figure of speech that describes an object that isnt literally true
Main Idea
the point of the paragraph, the most important thought about the topic.
To describe the main idea ask: yourself this question: What, Where, Why, How much, When, Who, How Many
Supporting Details
A paragraph contains facts, statements, examples-specifics which guide us to a full understanding of the main idea. They clarify, illuminate, explain, describe, expand and illustrate the main idea and are supporting details.
Poetry
literary work to express feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; genre of literature.
Context Clues
hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words.
Nonfiction
prose writing that is based on facts, real events, and real people, such as biography or history.
Fiction
Fiction generally is a narrative form, in any medium, consisting of people, events, or places that are imaginary—in other words, not based strictly on history or fact. In its most narrow usage, fiction refers to written narratives in prose and often specifically novels, though also novellas and short stories.

Setting
the place or type of surroundings where something is positioned or where an event takes place.
Biography
an account of someone’s life written by someone else.
Autobiography
an account of a person’s life written by that person.
Simile
a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g., as brave as a lion, crazy like a fox ).
