Expect the author’s voice to be strong, typically advocating for or against something, presenting their own opinions, and the purpose of the passage to change the reader’s mind
An author is absent in the passage
Expect the author’s voice to be more passive and neutral, presenting information from third-parties rather than their own opinions, and the purpose of the passage to be informative
Subject
The general theme or topic of the passage; encompasses most of what the passage presents
Main point
A summarization of the entire passage
Primary purpose
Why did the author write this passage?
