Fact
Close paraphrase of something stated in the passage
Inference
Not stated outright, directly supported by statements in the passage
Line reference or lead word–> read 5 lines above and below
If no reference go back to the passage and evaluate each choice
Attractive wrong: too extreme to be supported by the passage, wrong issue-not what the question is asking about, quote words or phrases from the passage out of context -different meaning in the passage
Organization
Requires you to describe the passage as a whole
Break down choices into pieces and compare to the passage
Look for words like “therefore, for example, in contrast”
Attractive wrong: mix up the progression, describe something the author did not do
Fiction
Understanding how the passage works is key
Attractive wrong: describe function of other part of the passage that the question is not asking about
Reasoning
Asked to apply new information to the passage or go a step further
Go back to the passage, find relevant part, paraphrase, articulate what correct answer must do
Will not be out of scope, directly relevant to issue raised in passage
Attractive wrong: not relevant to argument made(wrong part of passage), answers that don’t go far enough to do anything to the passage
Strong language is not an issue
Process of eliminate techniques
Wrong part of passage
Extreme language- red flag (see if passage supports strong language or strength/weaken question
Too narrow/broad
Partially wrong- not matter how good the answer starts off if anything is amiss you must eliminate it, read throughly and to the end
Not supported by passage: must prove answer with info from passage, don’t invent a connection if one isn’t already present
Main point/ primary purpose
Find an answer that describes the passage as a whole
Don’t need to go back to passage before reading the answer choices
Every word matters! Even one word can make an answer wrong
Attractive wrong: too narrow
