Big Picture / Synthesis Questions:
Common GMAT Passage Types (4)
“Main point”
“Primary purpose”
“Best describes central..”
“Most appropriate”
Watch out for:
- Review —> often a study;
––Notes: what it’s about, what’s good, what’s bad - Problem —>
- Claim/Perception —>
- Phenomenon —> science passages start with a surprise/change, speculates, then experiments.
WATCH OUT FOR:
- One word f*ck ups
- Hyper-specific answers (ie specific details)
According to Passage/Inference = Fetch / Little Picture:
“According to Passage" “Can be inferred/implied” “Passage suggests” “Authors attitude” “Authors regard”
Questions are about passage OR the author
“Supplies/Address” (each answer has it’s own fetch phrase)
- ID fetch phrase
- Go hunt in passage
Good answer will mimic or repeat key phrases or ideas.

Purpose Questions - what’s the key?
“Highlighted text/word”
“Purpose of paragraph”
Understand the context around line/quote/section

DO NOT write numbers, dates, latin, lists
Write at end of paragraphs or upon a finding…(eg line 10)
Rule of thumb…15-20 words of notes.
