Topic and summary sentences
Convenient way to encapsulate the main idea of a text.
Fact and opinion
Fact can be subjected to analysis and can be either proved or disproven.
Opinion is the authors personal feeling.
Biases and stereotypes
Evident whenever the author is unfair or inaccurate in his or her presentation
Identifying the logical conclusion
If the author intends the reader to draw a certain conclusion then all of his argumentation and detail should be leading toward it.
Topics and main ideas
Topic is the subject of a text or what the text is about.
Main idea is the most important point being made by the author.
Supporting details
Provide evidence and backing for the main point.
Themes
An issue, an idea, or a question raised by the text.
Persuasive writing
The author is attempting to change the readers mind or convince him of something he did not believe previously.
Appeal to emotion
Sometimes authors will appeal to the readers emotion in an attempt to persuade or to distract the reader from the weakness of the argument.

The author suggest two things are similar when in fact they are different
