Key Ideas and Details
Questions ask about the main idea of the passage and the details that support that main idea.
Craft and Structure
Questions ask about the craft of writing, including organization of the text, word choice, and the author’s purpose.
Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
Questions require drawing conclusions from passages and integrating from multiple sources.
Main Idea
The argument that the author is trying to make about a particular topic.
Topic
The subject of the story.
Topic Sentence
Usually appears early in the passage. Explains the main idea.
Supporting Details
Reinforce the author’s main idea.
Summary Sentence
Comes at the end of a passage, sums up passage and usually restates the main idea and author’s key evidence.
Fact
Statement or thought that can be proven to be true.
Opinion
An assumption, not based in fact, that cannot be proven to be true.
Entertain
Entertain the reader or tell a story.
Persuade
Persuade the reader of his or her opinion.
Describe
Describe something, such as a person, place, thing, or event.
Explain
Explain a process or procedure.
Narrative Writing
Tells a story (novel, short story, play)
Informational Writing
Informs people (newspaper and magazine articles)
Technical Writing
Explains something (product manual, instructions)
Persuasive Writing
Tries to convince the reader of something (Opinion column or a blog)
Text Structure
Distinct organizational patterns, uses the logical relationships between ideas to improve the readability and coherence of a text.
Problem - Solution
The author outlines a problem and then discusses a solution.
Comparison - Contrast
The author presents two situations and then discusses the similarities and differences.
Cause - Effect
Author recounts an action and then discusses the resulting effects.
Descriptive
The author describes and idea, object, person, or other item in detail.
Primary Source
An unaltered piece of writing that was composed during the time when the events took place. Usually these texts are written by people involved.
