Read And Write Flashcards
Decoding
The ability to apply your knowledge of letter-sound relationships, including knowledge of letter patterns, to correctly pronounce written words.
Anchored Word Instruction
Choose important words from reading, print them on cards and focus specifically on their meaning.
Oral Vocabulary
Words that we use in speaking or recognize in listening.
Reading Vocabulary
Words we recognize or use in print.
Fluency
The ability to read quickly and with expression.
Reading Status Assessments
Beginning, middle and end-of-year assessments students give themselves responding to and later comparing how they are growing as readers.
Teacher Read-Aloud
Teacher reads aloud to the students. This is one of the major motivators for children’s desire to read.
Sustained Silent Reading (SSR)
Self-Selected Reading
Students choose the material they want to read for about 20 minutes each day.
Big Buddy Readers
Older, struggling readers practice reading easy books and then read them aloud to younger students.
Reading Conference
Individual student-centered conversations used to monitor individual reading, encourage individual reading interest and help with book selections.
Five-Finger Test
Select a page from the book to read. Hold up all five fingers on one hand and begin to read. Each time the student encounters a word that is hard to read, he or she puts down one finger. If all five fingers are in the down position before a student finishes reading the page, the book is probably too difficult. The student probably should put the book back on the shelf and look for one that won’t be too hard.
Classroom Bookboard
Create a bulletin board with spaces for 40 to 50 books. Designate three colors to stand for different reactions to the books. The students attach their reactions to the appropriate titles.
Conventions
Arbitrary words about how we proceed through print.
Phonemic Awareness
The ability to recognize that words are made up of a discrete set of sounds and to manipulate the sounds.
Concrete Words
Words early readers know, usually because they are important to them.
