Q

What are the advantages of a nuclear powered CVN?

A
  • Travel faster
  • stay on station longer
  • require fewer support ships
  • greater mobility and flexibility in tactical maneuvers
  • five day faster CONUS to MED than CV’s
  • not constrained by carrier propulsion fuel reserves
  • no large funnels, more room for big radars
  • less detectable without the exhaust plumes
  • no infrared signatures of conventional propulsion exhaust
  • less corrosion of aircraft from propulsion exhaust
  • less vulnerable to fire damage, no fuel in propulsion spaces
  • larger fuel capacity to support air ops with almost double the aviation fuel
  • almost 50 percent more weapons capacity to support sustained air strikes
