Reactivity Series Flashcards
What metals react with water?
Potassium, calcuim, sodium, magnesium
What is the general equation for metals reacting with water?
Metal + water > metal hydroxide
What metals react with acid?
Potassium, sodium, calcuim, magnesium, aluminium, zinc, iron, tin, tin, nickel, lead
Are there any we wouldn’t react with acid? Why not?
Potassium and sodium, too reactive
What is the general equation for metals reacting with acids?
Metal + acid > salt + hydrogen
What type of salt does hydrochloric acid make? Can you give an equation?
Sodium + hyrdochloric acid > sodium chloride
What type of salt does sulphuric acid make? Can you give an equation?
Magnesium + sulphuric acid > magnesium sulphate + hydrogen
Write the equation for the thermite reaction
Aluminium + iron (3) oxide > aluminium oxide + iron
If the displacement reaction is between a metal and a metal oxide (both solids) what do we somtimes call the reaction?
Competition reaction
What is the thermite reaction used for? Why?
To weld together rail way tracks - it is so hot that it fills in the gap
What is needed for iron to rust?
Oxygen + water
What is the chemical name for rust?
Iron (3) oxide
What is a redox reaction?
Reactions involving reduction and oxidation - these happen together
What is galvanising? Why does it work?
Iron dipped in molten zinc - zinc reacts with oxygen instead or iron
Galvanising
A : the protection still works even if the zinc layer is badly scratched
D: it disintegrates over years of extreme weather
What is sacrificial protection? Why does it work?
When a metal more
