Reactivity series Flashcards
List the reactivity series from most to least reactive

What are the conditions required for rusting?
Oxygen and water must be present for rusting to happen
What is the equation for rusting?
iron + water + oxygen -> hydrated iron (3) oxide
Describe an investigation for rusting:
1: Put an iron nail into a test tube that is filled half with water
2: Put an iron nail into boiling water with some oil on top
3:Put another iron nail into a test tube with just calcium chloride
What is the outcome of the rusting investigation:
The nail with the test tube with water and oxygen rusts
The nail in the middle does not rust as there is no oxygen due to the oil and boiling
The nail on the right does not rust because there is no water
The results show that both oxygen and water MUST be present for rusting to occur
What are the most common barrier methods?
Paint, oil, grease and electropainting
What is meant by the term sacrificial protection?
A more reactive metal being attached to a less reactive metal which can prevent rusting
What is an example of sacrificial protection?
Zinc blocks being put onto a ships hull
What is meant by the term galvinisation?
It is the process where a layer of zinc covers the iron that is to be protected, this can be done by electroplating or dipping into molten zinc
What is oxidation?
Any reaction in where an substance gains oxygen
What is reduction?
Any reaction in which a substance loses oxygen
What is an oxidation agent?
A metal oxide that supplies the oxygen (E.g CuO)
What is a reducing agent?
A metal oxide that removes the oxygen (e.g Zn)
