Reactivity Of Metals Flashcards
what is the structure of pure metals and alloys?
giant 3d lattice
ALLOY- layers are disrupted by different size atoms
PURE- layers slide over eachother
describe a metallic bond
strong electrostatic forces of attraction between the metal ions (+) and the negative electrons.
properties of metals and alloys
Metal- ductile and malleable
Alloy- hard, less malleable
what does a metal + acid go to?
metal + acid > metal salt + h2
what is a displacement reaction?
a reaction where the more reactive metal displaces the less reactive metal in the compound.
an example of a displacement reaction
copper oxide + carbon > carbon dioxide + copper
what are oxidising/reducing agents?
oxidising agents are substances which oxidise something else
visa versa
what is aluminium ore called?
Bauxite
what has to be done to aluminium before it is electrolysed?
it has to be put in cryolite to dissolve the thin oxide layer covering the aluminium.
what are some observations of the reaction between magnesium and water?
- slow reaction
- bubbles on surface
- slightly alkaline
what are some observations of the reaction between magnesium and steam?
- glows with bright white light
- the product is a white solid
- gas is produced
what is an observation of the reaction between calcium and water?
-lots of bubbles
what are some observations of the reaction between barium and water?
- effervescence
- cloudy solution
what are some observations of lithium when is is put in water?
- shiny when first cut, but reacts with oxygen and tarnishes
- floats on the surface
- effervescence
- UI turns purple
what happens when sodium reacts with water?
- turns into a molten ball
- floats and moves on surface
- effervescence
