Reactivity of metals Flashcards
1
Q
Why do the group 1 elements/metals get more reactive as you go down the group?
A
- Atom itself is bigger
- Outer shell electrons further away from the nucleus
- Attraction between outer shell electrons and nucleus is weaker
- electron can be lost more easily therefore element more reactive
2
Q
Reaction of lithium in water
A
- React with the oxygen to create a layer of oxide
- Floats on the water and gives off hydrogen gas
3
Q
Reaction of sodium with water
A
- Reacts more quickly than lithium with oxygen
- Floats on water and gives off hydrogen gas more vigorously
- Melts into a ball
4
Q
Reaction of potassium with water
A
- Reacts more quickly than sodium with oxygen
- Hydrogen gas reacts with the heat and catches fire
5
Q
Reaction of calcium with water
A
- Reacts less quickly than lithium
- Bubbles and produces hydrogen gas
- Cloudy white precipitate of calcium hydroxide forms
6
Q
Reaction of calcium with dilute acid
A
Very quickly
7
Q
Reaction of magnesium with dilute acid

8
Q
Reaction of zinc with dilute acid
A
More slowly
9
Q
Reaction of iron with dilute acid
A
More slowly than zinc
10
Q
Reaction of copper with dilute acid
A
Very slowly
11
Q
