reactivity Flashcards
what is the order of most reactive to least reactive metals/gases
•potassium
•sodium
•lithium
•calcium
•magnesium
•aluminium
•carbon
•zinc
•iron
•hydrogen
•copper
•silver
•gold
which metals react most violently with water
group 1 metals:
•potassium
•sodium
•lithium
(float on water, melt/disappear and form a ball of molten metal, lots of bubbles/fizzing (hydrogen))
what is the flame test colour for potassium
lilac
what is the flame test colour for sodium
yellow
what is the flame test colour for lithium
red
what is the flame test colour for calcium
orange/red
what is the flame test colour for copper
blue/green
explain why the the more shells an atoms has the more reactive the metal is
the further the outer electron is from the nucleus, the weaker electrostatic attraction between the nucleus and the outer electron, so electron is lost more easily
describe the reaction of the group 2 metals (calcium and magnesium) when reacting with water
calcium - fairly vigorous reaction/reacts less strongly with water
magnesium - reacts very slowly with water
