Reactivity Flashcards
List the basic reactivity series (word and symbol) from most reactive to least reactive
Potassium, K
Sodium, Na
Calcium, Ca
Magnesium, Mg
Zinc, Zn
Iron, Fe
Copper, Cu
Silver, Ag
Gold, Au
Define displacement
A displacement reaction occurs when a more reactive metal can replace a less reactive one in a salt.
How are salts made?
When a metal or metal compound (such as a metal oxide or hydroxide or carbonate) reacts with an acid.
What are the names and formulae of the three common acids you find in the laboratory?
Hydrochloric acid, HCl
Sulfuric acid, H2SO4
Nitric acid, HNO3
What is MASH
Metal + Acid —> Salt + Hydrogen
What is MOASH2O
Metal Oxide + Acid —> Salt + Water
What is MOHASH2O
Metal Hydroxide + Acid —> Salt + Water
What is MCO3ASH2OCO2
Metal Carbonate + Acid —> Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide
Define neutralisation
When bases or alkalis react with acids to make a salt and water (and no H2)
