Forms of energy released in reactions
heat, sound, light
Why is Temperature a “State function”
Any changes in value are independent of the pathway between the initial and final measurement.
What is heat?
A form of energy that is transferred from a cooler body to a warmer body
On a particular level, what happens when heat is transferred to an object?
An increase in the average kinetic energy of particles and in turn an increase in their movement.
Thermochemistry
The study of heat changes that occur during chemical reactions.
Exothermic Reaction
A chemical reaction in which heat is transferred from the system to the surroundings.
In endothermic reactions, heat is absorbed into the …………., from the……….
system, surroundings
Why is bond breaking an endothermic process?
Energy is absorbed by the reaction system to break molecular chemical bonds.
Why is bond making an exothermic process?
Energy is released from reaction system to surroundings when new chemical bonds are made.
Why do exothermic reactions have a negative enthalpy change and vice versa?
Enthalpy change is defined in terms of the reaction system and not the surroundings, so if heat is lost the enthalpy change will be negative.
