Reactions with Oxygen Flashcards
1
Q
Magnesium
A
- 2Mg + O2 = 2MgO
- Burns with a bright white light
- Gives a powdery ash of magnesium oxide
- Not very soluble in water but can dissolve to form an alkaline solution
2
Q
Sulfur
A
- S + O2 = SO2
- Burns with a blue flame
- Poisonous, colourless sulfur dioxide is produced
- Can dissolve in water to form sulfurous acid
3
Q
Hydrogen
A
- 2H2 + O2 = 2H2O
- Burns with a pale blue flame
- If you ignite a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen it will explode
