1569 (THREAT)
The Northern Rebellion - Catholic Nobles planned to replace Elizabeth with Mary, Queen of Scots. An army was raised and the rebels disbanded.
1570 (THREAT)
The Papal Bull - The Pope issues message that excommunicates Elizabeth from the Catholic Church and calls on English Catholics to help end her rule
1571 (LAW)
Recusancy fines introduced for Catholics who did not participate in Protestant services and Catholic items banned (such as rosary beads). This law was not heavily enforced)
1571 (THREAT)
Ridolfi plot - Led by an Italian- Ridolfi - and involved the Duke of Norfolk once again. Netherlands would invade England and Elizabeth would be murdered and replaced by MQS, who would then marry Norfolk. First plan to involve foreign help but failed due to Elizabeth’s spies decoding secret messages regarding the plot.
1574 (THREAT)
Spanish priests arrive in England, aiming to convert the Protestant population back to Catholicism.
1580 (THREAT)
Jesuit priests arrive in England to fulfil same purpose as Spanish priests, spreading Catholic ideals
1581 (LAW) - Laws start to become much harsher against Catholics
Recusancy fines increased, a law that became strictly enforced. Converting anyone to Catholicism was punishable as high treason.
1583 (THREAT)
Throckmorton Plot - Plan to assassinate Elizabeth and replace her with MQS led by Sir Francis Throckmorton. French and English Catholics would then form an uprising with Spanish support. The plot was discovered and Throckmorton was executed whilst MQS was placed under closer guard.
1585 (LAW)
Anyone made a Catholic Priest after 1559 considered a traitor and would face death. Anyone who attempted to assassinate the Queen could also be killed.
1586 (THREAT)
Babington Plot - Same plan as the other plots/rebellions to replace Elizabeth with MQS. Plot discovered and due to MQS accepting the plan, she was put on trial and executed along with Anthony Babington, the main plotter.
1588 (THREAT)
Spanish Armada - King Philip of Spain attempts to take revenge on England for stealing Spanish gold + killing MQS, a Catholic Queen. The plan was to invade with an armada of ships and replace Elizabeth with his daughter. The armada was defeated by the English Navy.
1593 (LAW)
The “Statute of Confinement” - Catholics no longer able to travel more than 5 miles from their house without permission.
