Reactions Test!โ๐ป๏ธโญ๏ธ Flashcards
An example of combustion is
Burning of naphthalene
Combustion
A combustion reaction is when oxygen combines with another compound to form water and carbon dioxide. These reactions are exothermic, meaning they produce heat.
Synthesis
A synthesis reaction is when two or more simple compounds combine to form a more complicated one. LIKE MARRIAGE
Example of synthesis
Combination of iron and sulfur to form iron (2) sulfur
Decomposition
A decomposition reaction is the opposite of a synthesis reaction- a complex molecule breaks down to make simpler ones. LIKE DIVORCE
Example of decomposition
Electrolysis of water to make oxygen and hydrogen gas
Single displacement
It his is when one element trades places with another element in a compound. A+BC -> AC + B. Look for one thing
Example of single displacement
Magnesium replaces hydrogen in water to make magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen gas
Double Displacement
It his is when the anions and cations of two different molecules switch places, forming two entirely different compounds. Like the dos se doe when switching dance partners
Example of double displacement
Reaction of lead (2) nitrate with potassium iodine to form lead (2) iodine and potassium nitrate
Law of conservation of mass
Mass is not created ore destroyed; itโs conserved, changed, rearranged
In combustion reactions itโs better to start with
1) C
2) H
3) O
Acid base
This is a special kind of double displacement reaction that takes place when an acid and base react with each other. The H+ ion in the acid reacts with the OH- ion in the base, causing the formation of water
What is generally the product of an acid base reaction
Some ionic salt and water
