How do the most reactive metals (potassium-lithium) react with water?
Fizzes, gives off hydrogen gas
How do the most reactive metals (potassium-lithium) react with acid?
Explode
How do the second most reactive metals (calcium-iron) react with water?
React very slowly
How do the second most reactive metals (calcium-iron) react with acid?
Fizz, give off hydrogen gas
How do the least reactive metals (tin-gold) react with water?
No reaction
How do the second least reactive metals (tin-lead) react with acid?
React slowly with warm acid
How do the least reactive metals (copper-silver) react with acid?
No reaction
How are unreactive metals found in the Earth?
Pure metals - can be mined
How are most metals found in the Earth?
Compounds in rock. If there is enough to be worth extracting, it is called an ore.
Where does carbon place on the reactivity series?
Between aluminium and zinc
Where does lead and copper place on the reactivity series?
Hydrogen
How are metals less reactive than carbon extracted?
By reduction with carbon
How are metals more reactive than carbon extracted?
Electrolysis
What is oxidation?
Loss of electrons
What is reduction?
Loss of electrons
What happens in a displacement reaction?
More reactive element takes the place of a less reactive element in a compound
What does a metal’s reactivity depend on?
How readily it forms an ion by losing electrons
Remember: learn ionic equations!
What is a spectator ion?
An ion in an ionic equation which does not change so is removed
What do not split into ions in the ionic equation?
Metals, covalent substances, solid ionic substances
What is a half equation?
An equation showing half of a full ionic equation
How do you write an ionic equation?
- Check symbol equation is balanced
- Identify all aqueous compounds
- Write compounds out as ions
- Remove spectator ions
What is a redox reaction?
Reactions involving reduction or oxidation
