Reactions of metals Flashcards
What is the combustion equation?
Metal = Oxygen = Metal oxide
What is combustion?
A reaction that releases energy, usually heat or light.
What is a fuel?
A chemical that reacts with oxygen.
What is the hydrocarbon equation?
Methane + Oxygen = Carbon dioxide + Water
What is a displacement reaction?
When the metal and the metal in the compound swap places.
What happens if a metal is displaced?
If the metal on its own is more reactive than the metal in the compound, it will displace it.
What happens if there is no reaction in a displacement reaction?
If the metal on its own is less reactive than the metal in the compound then no reaction will take place.
What is the reactivity series?
If some types of metals react more rigorously or easily than others to different reactions, we call them more reactive and make a list of elements in order of their reactivity.
What are gold and silver known as (type of metal)?
Pure metals.
What is a pure metal?
A metal that is so unreactive that it can be found underground.
What are iron oxide and copper carbonate known as (type of metal)?
Minerals.
What are minerals?
Metals that are found naturally in the ground are combined with other elements to make compounds.
What are hematite - which contains iron - known as (type of metal)?
Metal ore.
What is a metal ore?
A mineral that contains enough metal to make the worth mining.
How can metals that are less reactive than carbon be extracted?
By heating them with carbon.
