Reactions of acids and bases Flashcards
What are four types of bases?
Metal Carbonates, metal oxides, metal hydroxides, ammonia , amines
What is a neutralisation reaction?
A reaction between an acid and a base
General equation for a neutralisation reaction
Acid + base → salt + water
Reaction between acid and metal
Acid + metal → metal salt + hydrogen
Reaction between acid and carbonate
Acid + carbonate → salt + water + carbon dioxide
Reaction between acid and ammonia
Acid + ammonia → ammonium salt
Which metals react most vigorously with acids?
Very reactive found metals higher up in the reactivity series e.g. calcium and magnesium
What metals don’t react with acids at all?
Metals below hydrogen in the reactivity series e.g. copper
What salt is formed when ethanoic acid is used?
Metal ethanoate
What shows that the gas produced when an acid reacts with a metal is hydrogen?
The gas collected in the test tube produces a squeaky pop when a lighted splint is placed inside.
How can you show that the gas produced when an acid reacts with a carbonate is CO2?
When the gas is bubbled in limewater, it goes milky
When hydrochloric acid and ammonia are at the same concentration, why is more ammonia needed for the neutralisation?
Ammonia is a weak base
What bases reacts in a similar way to ammonia?
Amines
Reaction between methylamine and hydrochloric acid?
Methylamine + hydrochloric acid → methylammonium chloride
Reaction between ethyl amine and nitric acid?
Ethylamine + nitric acid → ethylammonium nitrate
