Reactions Flashcards
Decomposition
One substance breaks down to form two or more simpler substances; the opposite of synthesis
AB=A+B
Synthesis
Is the combination of two or more substances to form a compound; the opposite of decomposition
A+B=AB
Dehydration
Is a special type of decomposition that involves the removal of H2O from hydrated salts
AB•xH2O=AB+H2O
Combustion
A chemical reaction that produces large amounts of heat and light; it involves the reaction of a substance with oxygen
A+O2=A?O?
Combustion of hydrocarbons
When compounds containing hydrogen and carbon react with oxygen to produce Co2+H2O
C?Hy+O2=Co2+H2O
Single replacement
Involves the replacement of one element in a compound with another
(Metal replaces metal)
A+BC=B+AC
Non-metal replaces a non-metal
Not all single replacement reactions can occur; the element doing the replacing must have a higher activity than the element it is trying to replace
D+BC=C+BD
Double replacement
Occurs when elements in reacting compounds exchange places
AB+CD=CB+AD
Neutralization
An acid and base react to form a salt and water
HA+BOH=BA+H2O
